What does Vreemdelingenzaken do?
Vreemdelingenzaken handles applications from foreign nationals who wish to stay in Suriname or continue their residence. Its tasks include:
- handling applications for residence, extension of residence and establishment;
- handling applications concerning the status of minor children;
- handling naturalisation applications, including applications under Article 8 WNI and Article 16 WNI, the option for 18-year-olds under Article 5 WNI and naturalisation of foreign nationals married to a Surinamese citizen under Article 12 WNI.
Vreemdelingenzaken also has statutory tasks that may lead to a negative decision. VZ can refuse applications, withdraw permits, declare foreign nationals undesirable and prepare the removal of foreign nationals who are not permitted to stay in Suriname.
